FAQ

What is Speech and Debate?
Speech and Debate (also known as Forensics, and often referenced to as “S&D”) is a public speaking program. It offers many events that focus on different aspects of public speaking, such as making up a speech on the spot (Impromptu or Extemporaneous), interpreting scripts (Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic Interp., plus other statewide events such as Interpretative Reading in Washington, or Poetry/Prose in Oregon), debating topics (Lincoln-Douglas debate, Public Forum), and persuasive speaking (Original Oratory, Student Congress).

Why should I join Speech and Debate?
Public speaking is a necessary skill throughout life. It’s needed throughout high school and college, as well as in most careers. Speech and Debate looks excellent on any college application, and many colleges offer scholarships for students willing to participate on the university’s team. Often, the skills learned in Speech and Debate will be continually used, even after leaving the program. National Forensics League (the National Speech and Debate association) alum include Oprah Winfrey, Adam Sandler, and abundant amounts of government officials such as Senators Richard Lugar and Russ Feingold.
S&D bonds students across the district, and many end up making their closest friends through the program. Not only does the program give lifelong skills to the participants, but also lifelong friends.

What events are offered through the Speech and Debate program?
There is a wide range of events to choose from if entering the program.
